The G-Wagon was originally developed as a military vehicle, and first became a civilian vehicle in 1979. It began as a utilitarian 4x4 vehicle, and the first-gen vehicles were available in 3 different body types: an open-body with a removable soft-top, a station wagon, and a closed wagon. The first-gen G-Wagon was not initially imported to the USA, because it's simple, utilitarian design contrasted with Mercedes-Benz's reputation for luxury vehicles in the United States.
