The Willys VJ-2 Jeepster was an early attempt by Willys to crossover to the passenger vehicle market. This was in contrast to their existing fleet of utilitarian trucks and military vehicles. The Jeepster was the first Willys vehicle limited to rear-wheel drive, which hurt its potential appeal to existing Jeep customers. It also featured luxury trim and fittings, such as white-wall tires, chrome trim and boxy styling. These factors, along with a limited marketing strategy, meant sales were low and production only lasted 3 years.
