The first-generation K5 Blazer was Chevy's first recreational off-road vehicle, built to compete with the Ford Bronco and the Jeep CJ-5. Chevy designed the K5 to have better on-road handling than its competitors as a way to differentiate it. The K5's design was based on the half-ton K10 pickup trucks, with a shorter wheelbase. It was originally offered with a removable hard top or a convertible soft top, and the passenger seats were optional.
